Except it's 3 AM, the mall is completely deserted, and you are just a digital glitch trapped inside a computer running Windows 95.

The birth of vaporwave is the music industry's ultimate inside joke. Some producers thought: "Why write new music when we can just steal forgotten 80s and 90s pop tracks?"

Vaporwavers are having an existential crisis over an era that half of them weren't even alive to experience. It is an ironic critique of consumerism, capitalism, and the false promise of the 90s that technology would make us happy (spoiler alert: it just gave us doomscrolling).
